Bleeding Heart Narrative - All That Was Missing We Never Had In The WorldWrite and record under the name of bleeding heart narrative, though my real name is not bleeding heart narrative at all, but Oliver Barrett. My approach to the music I make is centred around mistakes - both accidental and intentional - amd trying to record as ’naturally’ as possible. I record music in a semi-improvised fashion as I find that often the best things come while the notes are still not completely fixed in your head (often the worst things come too but they don’t make it past the delete key). I like dissonance and atonality and raw noise and the tensions when instruments fall slightly in and out of time and tempo. I also try to stay away from the ’synthesised’ sounds of much modern recording for something that keeps the sounds of the instruments actually being played. There’s a great line of Tom Waits’ where he says something to the effect that his favourite music is overhearing fragments of a song from down the street - notes mingling with the traffic and the neighbours arguing and the general city havoc. Which pretty much sums up my feelings towards the way I make music. I don’t like things to be too clean. When recording I like to just put a basic mic in a room - so you can hear the creak of the chair, the doors slamming outside, the rasp of a bow on strings (not just the resultant note) and the breaths in between, etc. I like music where you can hear the room/space - music that sounds played. So that’s mainly what I’m trying to make through bleeding heart narrative. I would still be very much up for the idea of playing gigs as bleeding heart narrative if anybody out there has any inclination to offer me one..
